A Word Covering Digital Publishing Software

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Producing an electronic magazine is a great deal of effort, so it’d be a shame to spoil the work by picking the wrong online newsletter software package. When you’ve chosen to make an online publication the essential next call is to pick out your software vendor. This isn’t about merely formatting your ezine nicely - on the contrary, this is a much more serious choice because it can mean the difference between success of failure for your entire venture.

The essential part of the package is, naturally, ease of use. The software could be the most extraordinary you’ve seen - but if you’re unable to use it, it’s worth nothing to you… Take the time to dry run different packages before you decide on a provider for your ebrochure. In making an online magazine you should also think about protective measures. Is the account secured? How about the content? Is it possible for people to simply copy and paste the magazine content or does the flash publishing software vendor have protective measures preventing such things? Is the content secure?

We strongly recommend you hop over to this reliable webpage for online newspaper software ideas.

Once you’ve created a flash magazine it’s time to outline a marketing timetable. Whatever your marketing plan may look like, you will should think about such matters - possibly not for every single issue but for the company overall. How will the business use networking media? How are you dealing with ads? Up to date marketing means thinking about search engine necessities when editing content. Is your content solely going to be made accessible for free? What about offering single copy and multiple subscription options? The nature of your content, as well - is it monetized at all or is this simply a not-for-profit venture? Will you be using teasers and summaries to market this ebrochure? How available is your magazine? Will it be private — in which case you should be able to look into all your hosting options or is it public? If public you should probably host directly with the provider. Have you worked out how you will cope with back copies? Technical support offered by the flash publishing software provider should form a large consideration. Do they offer only emergency technical help? Be assured by their response time! Are there useful FAQs and how-tos available? These are things you should look at prior to any problems, you will be happy you did!

The final decision of supplier could decide the failure or success in this carefully crafted magazine. And try googling the term “Zmags” for further pointers.

Bill O’Reilly: The Childhood Pornographer

Bill O’Reilly, whom Fox News refers to as “the new Pope of TV journalism” [http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,1256,00.html], wrote a book published in February of 2004 entitled “Those That Trespass”. The content of the book has been overlooked by the media. Randi Rhodes of Air America Radio recently revealed that this book has numerous explicit depictions of childhood pornography where grown men engage in sexual relations with teenage girls…and I mean FULL and erotic descriptions such that you would only expect to find in adult novels. I did a bit of my own research [to fact check] and found the same thing. Written words do not lie. To make it worse, O’Reilly decided to read his book ‘on tape’ so that his consumers could listen to the book as well. Don’t believe me? An excerpt [in Bill O'Reilly's voice] from the audio version is available at www.airamericaradio.com. The left tool bar has an Audio Highlights section. Click on ‘True Hypocrites’ and listen. Do you still believe that such a righteous, conservative, and Christian man could not do such a thing? Read the book reviews on Amazon at

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0767913817/qid=1131 131852/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/102-9331275-2817731?v=glanc e&s=books&n=507846

This sickens me. The Conservative Right is currently coming undone because they are horribly corrupt and twisted people that are only working to benefit themselves and their friends. The Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, is being investigated by the SEC for an ‘insider’ stock sale. The stock is from a company, HCA, that his family started and where his brother now sits on the board of directors. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby has been indicted on numerous criminal charges [and check out his sexual perversion on the main page]. Michael Brown [FEMA] has clearly demonstrated his lack of professionalism through revealing emails [see main page]. The White House Chief Procurement Officer was recently indicted on five felony charges. Tom Delay violated campaign finance laws in Texas. The former FEMA director [appointed by the current Bush in February of 2001], Joe Allbaugh, became a lobbyist for Halliburton after Brown replaced him. Is it any coincidence that Halliburton [once again] received no-bid contracts to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina? Now, we have the estranged sexual fetishes and fantasies of Conservative spokesman being revealed as well.

Conservatives argue that charges against their beloved leaders will not stand and are nothing more than the ‘criminalization of politics’ [http://thinkprogress.org/2005/09/28/truth-ronnie-earle/]. The Republican attempt to smear their opposition through television attack ads [http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/PollVault/story?id=1278080] because people are finally seeing him, his administration, and other Republican leaders as the crooks that they are.

Conduct your own fact check. I ask anyone who can dispute any claim that I made in this editorial to argue such on the Discussion link. However, ensure that you provide non-bias evidence and facts as I have. I do not care to entertain party-liners who are more concerned with emotionally fighting for the Republican Party than providing facts that can be researched. If you recall, Michael Moore openly stated that he would debate the legitimacy of his movie, Fahrenheit 9/11, on national television with anyone who wished to challenge him. Republicans launched smear campaigns by stating that he was ‘capitalizing on human tragedy’ [even though the Republican National Convention last year was held in NYC with a constant 9/11 theme], yet NOT A SINGLE PERSON took on his challenge…so who is muck-racking and who is truth-telling?

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

The Hero’s Journey:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.

Why It Pays To Listen Even When You Think They’re Nuts

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

My first published work became a bestseller as soon as it hit the bookshelves back in 1995 and it has been topping the lists ever since. Lucky you, some might say.

By and large the content has remained unchanged (apart from essential updating) and although ten years is a fair old run, what goes up must eventually come down.

So with that in mind I approached my publishing house with a suggestion for a commemorative 10th anniversary edition; new chapters, new cover, new cosmetics, new typesetting.

They loved the idea but balked at producing a new edition per se.

“Why?” I said, “It will start the ball rolling all over again.”

“No it won’t,” they said, “It will kill the golden goose.”

And so instead the publisher opted for a reprint dressed up as a new edition: new imprint, new chapters, new cosmetics, new typesetting - but no new cover; only a subtle color change to preserve continuity.

I thought they were nuts but they were right of course; stop supplying bookstores with a bestseller for five months and you risk consigning it to oblivion for evermore. And a block on supply there must be to allow the trade to dispose of existing stock.

That’s the price you pay with every new edition.

My author copies arrived a few days ago. I was well pleased with the new production and contacted the publishing house to express my satisfaction, intimating only mild concern over the lack of a new cover design.

“Oh, there will be a new cover,” they said. “We’ll incorporate that on the next reprint of the reprint - now that the link has been maintained”.

My idea was good but I hadn’t thought it through.

The publisher house did.

The 4th edition of “Starting Your Own Business” (How To Books ISBN 1845280709) will be appearing in bookstores worldwide mid-April 2005.

7 Book Publicity Tips for Authors and Small Publishers

Friday, May 8th, 2009

The biggest mistake authors make when trying to get free publicity is pitching either themselves or their books.

Don’t pitch authors! Pitch issues. Don’t pitch books! Pitch entire shows.

Example: If you wrote a book about how children of divorced parents suffer long-term effects well into adulthood, don’t try to entice TV producers with the book. Entice them with an entire show around the topic of “Children of divorced parents: Do they ever recover?” Then suggest two or three other guests who tie into your topic and could be interviewed, preferably someone who is on the other side of the issue. If you can do that, you’ve just given producers an idea for an entire show, and they’re more likely to bite because you’ve done their work for them.

Here are 6 more book publicity tips:

–Be sure you have a good quality professional photo of yourself. I’m amazed at the number of authors I write stories about who don’t have photos I can use.

–Use a “tip sheet” in your media kit that ties into your topic. Example: You write a book about how to discipline children. Your tip sheet might be something like “9 Tips for Calming Your Child’s Temper Tantrum.” Each tip should be no longer than one or two short sentences. The media love these tips because they can reprint them as a sidebar to a longer story. See Special Report #16: How to Write Tip Sheets That Catch the Media’s Attention

–If you have a website, place the author’s photo and updated contact information at the site. Sometimes when trying to contact an author, I go to their website and then search in desperation for contact info.

–Don’t be afraid of controversy when it comes to book promotion. The more controversial you are willing to be, the greater your chances of coverage by the media, particularly broadcast. Radio shows in particular don’t want only light. They want heat.

–The author should write an opinion column taking a strong stand on one side of a controversial issue that ties into the topic of the book. Then target the column to the publication that is read by people who you want to buy your book.

–If you want to get into a particular publication, call the advertising department and ask for a copy of their free Editorial Calendar. This is a listing of all special sections and topics planned for the year. Review the calendar and find a specific issue where your topic would be a good fit. Then call the publication, ask for the name of the person who edits that section, and write or e-mail them with your story idea. Do this several months before the publication is printed.

Most importantly, unless you are contacting the book reviewer, most media people don’t care what’s inbetween the covers of your book. They DO care about what’s inside your head, your expertise, and how you can help them. Remember that, and you’re well on your way to lots of free publicity.

Public Speaking Training

Friday, May 8th, 2009

There’s no magic pill to overcome stage fright. Confidence is gained and skills are honed over a period of time. Public speaking training courses range from self-help booklets to one-day seminars and workshops to extensive training sessions. Make sure that the course meets all your specific requirements. Choosing the wrong course can scare you away from public speaking for good. However, always remember that there is a possibility of success, and that if you fail, later success is still possible.

Each course is designed for a particular target group. If you are extremely shy and not use to public speaking, you should join a one-to-one course, where the trainer will give you complete attention. From there, you can move on to group sessions, sophisticated programs that teach presentation and question handling skills. Some courses even teach how to handle press conferences.

Take some routine check programs and decide whether you agree with their methods of public speaking coaching. Any course that gives you lots of literature and a huge list of ‘dos and don’ts’ will only add to your confusion. You might find yourself memorizing the rules instead of actually testing out your skills. Yes, the best way to go is with hands-on coaching. The best trainers think on-the-spot, not on paper.

Choose a program that has practical orientation and is highly interactive. It should teach you poise, voice modulation and build confidence to make not only rehearsed but also impromptu speeches. It should teach you how to handle tricky questions from the audience without getting agitated.

Article Marketing - How Does It Work (And Why Should I Care?)

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Article marketing is the act of writing articles and publishing them online (usually through an article directory or distribution site) to increase Web exposure, search engine ranking and website traffic.

When you publish articles online, you have the opportunity to put those articles (and by extension, yourself) in front of thousands of people seeking products or services like yours.

Let’s take real estate as an example. John and Jane Doe use Google to research “Austin, Texas real estate.” On the first page of search results, they find an article entitled “Austin Real Estate: Ten Tips for Buying a Home in Austin, Texas.” They read the article and find it well written, engaging, and above all helpful.

At the bottom of the article, they see an “About the Author” note that talks about Sally Smith, an agent with 20 years experience in the Austin area. And it also mentions Sally’s website, where they can find more articles, as well as a free report on Austin schools. Now let’s assume they continue their research, and at nearly every turn they encounter more articles published by Sally Smith.

That’s the power of article marketing. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re selling real estate, software or custom jewelry … article marketing can work for you!

When done right, article marketing combines the benefits of public relations, positioning, search engine visibility and branding. Best of all, it costs you nothing but time and effort. Try to get that from traditional advertising!

Dynamic Workshops - Success Rules to Practice

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Proper Preparation and Practice Prevent Poor Performance.

Even though the structure of a workshop may appear to be looser and more flexible than other presentations, it is imperative to be properly prepared - even more prepared than for other venues. In the type of workshop I prefer and give the most often, I gear it toward those who are in attendance. This means that I have to be prepared for a variety of situations, because everyone is different. Their feedback, questions, comments and needs are all different. If I am giving a two-hour workshop, I have enough material and activities planned for at least four hours, so that if one of my plans doesn’t work for this particular group, I have another direction I can switch to with ease.

Plan transitions with care.

Smooth transitions are important during any kind of presentation. If we jump from one topic to another too quickly and without any warning, or what I call “bridging,” we can leave our audience behind, so that they miss some of the new material and/or topic area. Just a short introductory sentence or description of where and why we are going in a certain direction should suffice. You can tell a brief story, sum up what you have been saying, ask a question or introduce the next topic with some sort of attention getting device.

Don’t hesitate to give assignments and/or homework.

Preferring workshops that continue at least into a second week, I always give the participants assignments to work on (with the statement that “there will be no punishment for not doing the homework”). A good number do work on the assignments and are delighted and proud to share their results. The more we expect from our students, the more they will expect from themselves and make the effort to please themselves and us.

Remember that Murphy’s Law is usually working.

So what can go wrong, will. Patricia Fripp, a well known speaker once said “Never assume, always confirm.” To the point of almost seeming obsessive, I feel that getting in touch with the meeting planner to confirm time, date, and location, along with what is expected of me and what I expect in the way of equipment and setup is imperative.

Otherwise, we may find that somewhere along the line, there has been some miscommunication which can prove to be disastrous. Also, think of all of the things that might go wrong - your handouts didn’t arrive, the bulb on the projector blows the minute you turn it on, the directions of how to get there are incorrect, and on and on. Just leave earlier than you need to, so that you will have lots of extra time to take care of any unforeseen problems and details that might occur.

Finally, make sure that you are having FUN!

By approaching every workshop with the attitude that it’s going to be a blast, you will guarantee that the participants will have fun too. In addition, realize that people learn in the proportion to the amount of fun they are having!

Three Reasons to Start Journaling…Today!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

In days gone by it was common to keep a diary or personal journal. Today few people do it and fewer recognize the astonishing power of keeping a daily journal. If you can read and write, you have access to the most amazing source of personal power and absolute magic!

When I first suggest journaling to clients, they claim they couldn’t possibly find the time. I contend that they simply haven’t realized the value of journaling and don’t yet see it as a priority. As the saying goes, “It takes 21 days to turn a behavior into a habit.” So, how about journaling for 15 minutes a day over the next 21 days? Try it, and watch it dramatically alter your life! After 21 days, most of my clients say they couldn’t imagine being without it. Many journal for a half-hour or more. The following are my top three reasons to keep a journal:

1. A journal will clarify your goals.

As you write a few thoughts each day, your ideas about what’s important, what is worthy of your energy and your time will become much more defined. You’ll automatically discover what you really want in life. Then, your inner compass can point the way to your best path.

2. A journal helps eliminate impulsiveness.

Some ideas sound really great in our imagination, but when written on paper they take on a new meaning. It’s easy to blurt out “I hate my boss!”, but writing about what it means to quit your job, change careers and start over will quickly result in one of two things: The temptation will fade away, or you’ll start formulating actual plans to make the necessary changes. Either way, you win!

3. A journal affirms the events of your life.

Writing about your life saturates it with meaning and power. Journaling about your child’s first steps or first tooth, the passing of a loved one or friend, the appearance of a particular opportunity or choice adds substance to these things and provides an historical context to your life experience.

Journaling has been referred to as a form of meditation. It has been known to spark romance, solve world problems and change the thinking of nations. It has the power to quiet the mind and focus your thoughts. It can heal anxiety, change your breathing and bring a smile to your face. At the very least, journaling will give you a few minutes to catch your breath before stepping into another day.

A Closing Thought: Using quality paper and a fountain pen or another beautiful writing instrument is a wonderfully-sensuous tactile experience. However, if you think that journaling with a pen and paper just isn’t your thing, I would request that you try it for a week or so. If it still feels awkward, email me at kcope@designed-alliance.com and we’ll brainstorm some alternative methods to journaling and find the one that’s right for you!

Making Better Use of Your Resource Box

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

What is a resource box ?

A resource box is what you usually find at the end of an article. They will contain the name of the author, a brief description of the author, a brief description of the sponsoring site and a link. If a reader likes what they read, they would have the tendency to find out where the article came from to read more. The resource bow will be their link to the source of the article and this will entice them to go to the site and do some more reading or research for the subject or topic they are interested in.

Through the recent years many people have learned the secrets of Search Engine Optimization. More and more sites have seen the effects articles have done for the traffic of their sites. Some have even created sites devoted entirely to providing articles that could be read by their website visitors and have links that could lead to many sites that are related to the topics and subjects of the articles.

For example, the sites may feature many articles about a whole lot of topics. As a website visitor reads the articles they have searched for, they can find at the end of the article a resource box that can be clicked on to link them to the site that has submitted the article. Of course the article would be in relation to the site. Lets say if the article is about rotating the tires, the resource box may lead to a link to a site that sells tires or car parts.

But like the article itself, the resource box must also be eye-catching to demand the attention and interest of the reader. While the resource bow encompasses only a small space, providing the right keywords and content for your resource box will provide more prodding for the reader to go to your site.

Now we know what resource boxes are, what are the benefits of having a good resource box? Mainly its driving traffic to your site. Many sites would allow articles to be placed in their sites because they can make use of the articles to fill their pages. They also get affiliation with other sites that can be beneficial for them as well. For the sponsoring site, when you get people to click on your resource box, you generate traffic that can be counted upon as potential customers.

So what would be a good content for your resource box? Basically it is keywords, learning about the proper keywords that people are mainly searching for. There are many tools you can find in the internet that can help you in determining what keywords to use.

Resource boxes can also make use of all the creativity it can get. You only get a small space for your resource box so you better make the most of it. Try to catch the attention of your reader with resource box content that can make them give a second look. Unlike TV ads, you don’t have visual aids to drive your point in. But you do have the power of imagination of a reader. With the right content, you can make them think and intrigued.

Another tip is to use keywords that should be related to your site. Do not mislead your potential website visitors. Build your credibility so that more people would get enticed to visit your site and browse what you have to offer. Make the people click your resource box by providing resource box content that makes a lasting impression. You only get one chance to wow them and hundreds of chances to repulse them.

Never underestimate the power of the resource box. It may be small in size but they will provide a significant aid in driving traffic to your site. A boring resource box will never get a job done. Be fun and creative but at the same time show that you have a great deal to offer, too much to ask for something that couldn’t fit a paragraph? Yes and no, there are many tips and guides that can help you in doing this, the first step is realizing how important a resource box could be in making people click your link and be directed to your site.
