Success through Risk

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

There’s a belief in online poker, and in life itself, that you can’t reach a big success unless you take a bit of a risk. In poker online, this is undoubtedly true. I have written in the past about the foolishness of being too ultra-aggressive, eventually someone is going to catch you and you’ll lose big. But some well-timed aggressiveness is always good. I was playing a game of No Limit Texas Hold Em at a casino recently when I was dealt 7-2 on the button. Normally when you get dealt 7-2 you throw in away and hope for a better hand next time. Certainly that is what I usually do. However, I noticed that everyone before all had folded. And the two player sin the blinds had been playing poker pretty tight. So I made a decent-sized raise in hopes of picking up the blinds. Well, the small blind folded but the big blind called me. Oh well, I tried, I thought to myself. Well, imagine my surprise, when the flip came out 7-7-2! Needless to say, I ended up winning a nice sized pot. Now you could say I never should have been in the hand in the first place, but just by making an aggressive play I ended up benefiting greatly. You never know what can happen unless you try and make a few plays.

Legalizing Online Poker

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Here’s an interesting report that shows the power struggle for legalizing poker online in the U.S. Thirty-six different parties spent a combined estimated $5.16 million lobbying Internet gambling in Washington, D.C. during the first quarter of 2010, according to a new report from BolaVerde Media Group (BVMG). The leader of the pack, Harrah’s Entertainment Inc, spent an estimated $1.22 million during this period, increasing its lobbying spend 73 percent from the fourth quarter of 2009.

The top five was rounded out by the Poker Players Alliance at $785,000, UC Group at $717,239, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce (USCC) at $664,442 and the Interactive Gaming Council at $412,580.

The first quarter’s total was down 16 percent from the fourth quarter of 2009–a drop-off primarily attributable to the USCC, the country’s biggest-spending special interest group, which, between the fourth quarter and the first, reduced online gambling outlay by 66 percent. The Q1 Internet Gambling Federal Lobbying Report analyzes total lobbying spend in the first quarter by company, per bill. Taking careful aim at comparing results from 2009 lobbying spend, the report takes a fascinating look at how policy decisions are being influenced by companies including Harrah’s, Wynn Resorts, MGM Mirage, PokerStars, PartyGaming, Intralot USA, the National Football League and Gtech, among others, as well as the newest spender on the block, Betfair US. Lots of poker rooms out there.

Living the Freeroll Life

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Living the Freeroll Life A freeroll, as the name implies, is a poker tournament that is completely free for everyone to enter. Many beginner websites suggest that completely new poker players play the freeroll life for a while before they graduate to the paying poker online games. While I think that there is definitely some merit in this idea, the freeroll life will not actually benefit you if you do not spend some time thinking about how these tournaments work. If you go into a freeroll without thinking, then you will not get any benefit from the free poker game. If you are going to live the freeroll life, you need to be aware both of who you are playing against and how you are playing. Freerolls, because they are universally acceptable to all players, are often full to the brink with fish. That means that you will be facing a much lower skill set than you would at a pay tournament. You need to be conscious of the skill set of your opponents if you are going to live the freeroll life. As a result of the lower skill level of the other players, you may actually find yourself playing worse than you would in a competitive field. Always take note of how you are playing, if you want to make the freeroll life work for you.

What Is a Favorable Conversion Rate?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Conversion rates are always contentious, and no where more than in the world of poker. When you play poker online, you are working on the assumption that you will be given the most accurate exchange rate. This tends to be true, but there are a few specific things that you should know before signing up to play at a foreign based internet casino.

One of the most important things for you to know before you sign up is to learn how exchange rates are calculated. Some casinos will only allow players to cash out at a specific time of the month. When players are only allowed to withdraw once a month, the casino has the prerogative to choose what exchange rate of the month to use. Some casinos out there will use the lowest exchange rate of the month when they calculate the payouts to players who need to change currency. This is an instance where you need to carefully check the casino’s policies, as well as the community forums, to discern exactly how foreign casinos calculate the exchange rate for their multicurrency customers.

Your best option would be to choose a poker website that allows players to cash out on a more frequent basis. The odds are that the more often you are allowed to cash out, the more likely it is that you will be able to get a good exchange rate. You want to make sure that you are getting everything that you deserve.

Sure you may have Texas Hold ‘Em locked down, but what if you get invited into a poker game of PL Omaha or 7-Stud with a bunch of fish business men, and you don’t know how to play well? Well you’d be losing a lot of expected value (-EV). So this is just a reminder to learn all the games. Just about every site out there has play or practice money, so why not hit up some of these practice money games and start to learn how to play them well. You don’t have to master them, just learn to play them well enough to get by if you’re invited into a fish barrel and want to be the shark at the table. See it’s not enough to just know Hold ‘Em and nothing else. Everybody is getting on the hold’em train. And it’s not just enough in Hold ‘Em to know ring game play, as tournaments and SnGs are all part of the money to be made out there as well. Tight Rep

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

There are many reasons to start slowly in a tournament, and among the most compelling is that playing conservative poker online will set your opponents up for when you decide to play aggressively later on in the tournament.

Stealing blinds in a tournament is an important way to keep yourself alive, even when you don’t have winning cards. This is a lot easier when your opponents have the impression that you are a tight player.

If you are a constant folder in the early hands, your opponents will take notice. By entering a pot with only the best cards, your poker online opponents will take note and remember that if you’re in the hand, you’ve probably got some monster cards.

By the time you’ve established your reputation of being a severely tight player, the blinds in the poker tournament will probably have risen to the point that they’re worth trying to buy. This is great news for you, because you are in a great spot to steal some blinds. So far in the tournament, your opponents have seen you raise with nothing but high pocket pairs and hands like A-K or A-Q, so they’re likely to fold when you bet into the pot. When you’re known as a tight player, you can start to steal blinds with abandon.

Appearances Can Be Deceiving

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

One of the biggest lessons to learn in poker is that what you expect and what happens are often two different things. As your opponents work to disguise their actions, and as the nature of the cards and what comes switches around you, the game of online poker can seem like a hall of mirrors, a shifting field of doors.

And yet, at the center of the game, there is a logic and a vitality that remains. The best players in the world are those who are able to stay true to their game, to keep their head above water, and remain ready to measure those conflicting signals in a way that develops a clear picture overall.

Learning not to let what you want to happen or what you think should happen dictate your entire perspective at the casino table is vital to the well being of a poker player’s mind. Allow yourself the idea that the image you’ve assigned to your opponent might not be right. Allow yourself the chance to change your read midhand, and to abandon ship when you need to. Allow yourself outs, and remember that a clear head is the only head that you should approach the table with.

Buying Your Individual Online Lotto Ticket Has Never Been so Simple for the European Lotto

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Have you ever enquired what the easiest means to play Euro Lottery is?

How could you win as much as feasible? Or even to scoop a Euro Lottery Big one

Therefore what could you really do to step-up your chances?

Lots of players merely leisurely walk across the high street and then buy their so called Lottery Tickets. In the hope of winning. But then the odds of winning the lotto are one in a couple of millions…not very liable, do you think?

Fortunately, according to the EuroMillions lottery statistics, 2/3 of Lotto Jackpot winners are syndicates!

Indeed, we all possess the solution. Evidently you will experience a stronger prospect to win the Jackpot if you belong to a lottery syndicate.

How lottery syndicates function?

A Euromillions Syndicate is a group of players who combine their money and buy as many lottery tickets as possible. Each lotto ticket has different numbers; so then chances are greater than taking part on your own.

If the elottery syndicate wins, each and every member acquires a portion from the winnings. So the more members that are in your e-lottery syndicate the higher your particular odds are but then; also your individual share in that respect is smaller.

You may just do a short survey on the internet, use - Yahoo, Bing and Google or several other search engines. Or possibly you can check some in your local newspapers in classified ads section.

Or possibly you might decide to sign-up to elottery

There are many advantages:

- You will get a pro service
- You will not miss a lotto draw
- You will get detailed statistics in your members back office
- Your Individual winnings are accumulated and you will receive a Cheque, Click2Pay, or MoneyBookers payment with your particular percentage!

- All this and a lot more from the comfort of your individual home

For me it means that the e-lottery syndicate uses a tried and trusted mathematical system and that guaranties that you will match at least one lotto number in each and every draw.

And, that means that still your particular pay out from Euro Lottery syndicate winnings is greater than you would have playing same lottery numbers on your own!

And finally, that means you could become an affiliate member and after qualifying for some acquirable, viable requirements you could be taking part in your own favorite Euromillions syndicate in effect FOR FREE…or maybe you could be effectively establishing your new income while playing lottery.

The option is yours:

The choice is yours - Enter on your own. Or maybe play the smarter way:

Take Part in a Euromillions syndicate and win more often.

Or possibly become even wiser and:

Take Part in a Euro syndicate and win more often and cover your lottery ticket cost and play for free + bring in an extra income.

No to the Show

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

online poker hands sometimes never make it to showdown. A poker player puts out a big bet or check raises, leading any other players to believe a big hand is behind the bet. Most likely, that is true but not always. In these situations, players will sometimes ask, “Will you show if I fold” or else they’ll lay down the hand declaring, “Your set has my two pair beat,” meant to prompt the raiser into showing the hand that won the pot.

Showing your poker hand is basically giving away information to your opponents. It is something that should be done very sparingly and only with the intention to sway how other players perceive you. For instance, a bluff with rags that makes everyone lay down is good to show occasionally to keep the other players confused. They will not be able to put you on hand because they know you sometimes bluff.

On the other hand, when a player announces a fold and makes an accurate read on your hand, say trips or two pair, showing the hand to verify that read is poor play. You are giving your opponents free information about your betting style. When someone gets a good read on your hand, don’t boost their confidence or give them a psychological edge by proving them right. Instead, always keep them guessing.
