My Adventure to Australia

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

My Australian tour of the coast between Sydney and Melbourne has been one of the nicest vacations I have ever done. Being the coast, the scenery was picturesque, the locals were friendly and there were a heaps of things to do.

With numerous car rental Sydney and car rental Melbourne options along the coast, renting a vehicle is the easiest way to make your way around. Car rental companies are more than happy to help you plan your tour and pin point the main tourist attractions along the way. I found a great deal traveling from Sydney to Melbourne just by doing a quick search online.

I headed south from Sydney through Royal National Park. The Grand Pacific Drive is breathtaking. I spent a few hours in Wollongong and thoroughly loved exploring the many coastal villages along the way before spending the night at Jervis Bay.

The next day I boarded a cruise to see the resident dolphin population that Jervis Bay is famous for. The immaculate white sand beaches made it extremely hard to leave given that I am visiting from England. Further south I bought some great, high quality craft items in the historic villages of Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba.

Mimosa Rocks National Park was beautiful, I even got a chance to swim in the lagoon. I drove a little further to watch surfers at Tathra Beach. That evening I lodged in the stylish village of Metung and had a tremendous seafood platter in one of the lakeside restaurants.

Wilsons Promontory National Park is home to great scenery and an abundance of wildlife such as kangaroos, koalas and wombats. The place is packed with activities to keep you busy, I spent an entire day hiking through forests, exploring beaches and climbing on granite mountains.

Next checkpoint was Fish Creek, a tiny, eccentric and thriving township with arts and crafts, books and cafes. I drove across the bridge over to Phillip Island, a popular family stop. At Nobbies Centre you can watch the penquins strutting up and down the beach and see one of Australia’s most remarkable fur seal settlements.

As initially planned, I ended my trip in Melbourne making my last stop at the heritage farm on Churchill Island. Renting a car was a convenient and fun way to do this amazing coastal drive from Sydney to Melbourne. Next time I may get a car rental in Melbourne and do this trip the other direction!

Mountain Bike Riding Trip

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

What a marvelous summertime it has been. We went on an spectacular mountain bike mountain bike ride through the Sequoias. Everything about the adventure was sensational except for the drive up there. I had my mtn bike on the back of the car and gear all packed up the night before. I left work early Thursday and started the drive alone. My meet up time was set for eight pm where I was to meet with my friends on the mountain since I didnt know where exactly the campsite would be. I had to make the timing just right otherwise I would not meet them. After that time, they were to expect that I got held up and would try again at the same spot at 10am the next day. This means if I was too late, I would end up sleeping in my car alone that night.

Turns out I made it through traffic and up the hill in time to unhook my bike, crack open a beer and ride up and down a couple of little hills before dark and before my buddies would arrive. The air was crisp and I was excited to be away from the city. The bike was in perfect shape and ready to hit some trails. The crew arrived to pick me up and show me where our spot was.

Our ride started early and we were ready with big packs stuffed with plenty of food and water. The first hill was killer and was a rude awakening to a very long ride. We pedaled over 10 miles uphill, that took over 2hrs. Making it to the summit was impressive. I chugged nice clean water out of my stainless steel water bottle.

The next 8hrs was spent jamming up and down hills, over fallen logs, off huge hits and hucking over big rocks. We half a few good breaks in between stopping to eat lunch and have a smoke at the three sisters, what an grand spot. The terrain was glorious and just right for some summertime riding. It was nice to see just a bit of snow left on the ground in certain spots.

Nepalese man, 75, oldest climber to conquer Everest Further, he was all too aware of the potential dangers Mt Everest could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Bahadur Sherchan returned a hero to Calgarians. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

The Chinese were flying their airplanes over Mount Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. Sherchan just 23 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

More than 3147 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Andrew Brash noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Chomolungma, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. “The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Chomolungma or Mount Everest. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though the Mount Everest is shared by two countries. They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. Now that Min Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. “Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

This season Anthony Loeff the French mountaineer is reporting the scales for Mount Everest after reaching the top of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania earlier this year.

Min Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Mt Everest. Andrew Brash last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

Indeed, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Bahadur Sherchan with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. His first found him within 160 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. Three years later, Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Chomolungma or Mount Everest to finish what he had started.

Andrew Brash and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

The 74-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Chomolungma.
