Three Reasons to Start Journaling…Today!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

In days gone by it was common to keep a diary or personal journal. Today few people do it and fewer recognize the astonishing power of keeping a daily journal. If you can read and write, you have access to the most amazing source of personal power and absolute magic!

When I first suggest journaling to clients, they claim they couldn’t possibly find the time. I contend that they simply haven’t realized the value of journaling and don’t yet see it as a priority. As the saying goes, “It takes 21 days to turn a behavior into a habit.” So, how about journaling for 15 minutes a day over the next 21 days? Try it, and watch it dramatically alter your life! After 21 days, most of my clients say they couldn’t imagine being without it. Many journal for a half-hour or more. The following are my top three reasons to keep a journal:

1. A journal will clarify your goals.

As you write a few thoughts each day, your ideas about what’s important, what is worthy of your energy and your time will become much more defined. You’ll automatically discover what you really want in life. Then, your inner compass can point the way to your best path.

2. A journal helps eliminate impulsiveness.

Some ideas sound really great in our imagination, but when written on paper they take on a new meaning. It’s easy to blurt out “I hate my boss!”, but writing about what it means to quit your job, change careers and start over will quickly result in one of two things: The temptation will fade away, or you’ll start formulating actual plans to make the necessary changes. Either way, you win!

3. A journal affirms the events of your life.

Writing about your life saturates it with meaning and power. Journaling about your child’s first steps or first tooth, the passing of a loved one or friend, the appearance of a particular opportunity or choice adds substance to these things and provides an historical context to your life experience.

Journaling has been referred to as a form of meditation. It has been known to spark romance, solve world problems and change the thinking of nations. It has the power to quiet the mind and focus your thoughts. It can heal anxiety, change your breathing and bring a smile to your face. At the very least, journaling will give you a few minutes to catch your breath before stepping into another day.

A Closing Thought: Using quality paper and a fountain pen or another beautiful writing instrument is a wonderfully-sensuous tactile experience. However, if you think that journaling with a pen and paper just isn’t your thing, I would request that you try it for a week or so. If it still feels awkward, email me at kcope@designed-alliance.com and we’ll brainstorm some alternative methods to journaling and find the one that’s right for you!

Wedding Flowers: Meeting with Florists

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Choosing a florist begins before you ever enter the florist’s shop. Take a moment and consider your first impression. Remember, you are hiring a florist professional for their attention to detail and their ability to create an atmosphere that invites you in. If their shop doesn’t invite you in or seems extreme in relation to your personal style, most probably the wedding flowers they provide you won’t be satisfactory to you either. There are always exceptions, but the chances are that this rule will prove true in your case. Do you really want to gamble on your wedding flowers just because your cousin Freda insisted that you had to use this particular florist?

Show the florist the wedding flower pictures and the swatches of your wedding dress material (and any other prominent materials from your wedding i.e. bridesmaids dresses). Talk. Make sure the florist grasps the concept that you have in mind for your wedding flowers and understand your budget and any other constraints that you are operating under (i.e. facility rules, etc.), and then let them go to work. Resist the urge to micromanage. In most cases at least one of the florists you visit can make your ideas for wedding flower combinations come to life in a manner that you never dreamed of. At the same time, however, go over every detail of the proposal (including set up time and schedule - which will vary greatly depending on how much there is to set up for your wedding flowers and how many other weddings the florist has that same day) carefully before you sign the agreement to provide your wedding flowers. Get several proposals for your wedding flower needs before you decide. It’s your wedding so be sure that you are getting the best wedding flowers for your budget.

Though it can be difficult to do, try not to get your heart too set on a particular type of wedding flowers (the possible exception to this might be your basic red rose). Flowers are beautiful but being living things they can be temperamental. Some flowers, such as gardenias and lilies are famous for triggering allergic reactions. If you have someone in your wedding party with bad allergies it might be wise to steer clear of flowers like these. Likewise, hollow stemmed flowers, such as the daffodils can drip sap on your wedding dress. Yes, this is a problem that can be overcome, but you need to be aware and prepared so your wedding flowers don’t ruin your wedding dress. Other flowers, most notably the lilies will drop a yellow pollen stain on your gown if you don’t have the wedding flower professional remove the stamens before you carry them down the aisle.

Two last notes about your wedding flowers. First, remember that not all flowers fare equally well in all types of weather. Some flowers wilt quickly in warm weather while other flowers actually turn black in colder temperatures. Either way you won’t be happy with the flower’s performance if you take it into a situation for which it is not suited.

Finally, remember that despite the advances in horticulture around the world, flowers (even wedding flowers) are still seasonal. Sure, if your pockets are deep enough, you might be able to have the florist import them from the other side of the globe but that will be expensive and even at that, there are some flowers that just won’t be available to join your wedding flowers in celebrating your marriage unless it’s just the right season somewhere.

Making Better Use of Your Resource Box

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

What is a resource box ?

A resource box is what you usually find at the end of an article. They will contain the name of the author, a brief description of the author, a brief description of the sponsoring site and a link. If a reader likes what they read, they would have the tendency to find out where the article came from to read more. The resource bow will be their link to the source of the article and this will entice them to go to the site and do some more reading or research for the subject or topic they are interested in.

Through the recent years many people have learned the secrets of Search Engine Optimization. More and more sites have seen the effects articles have done for the traffic of their sites. Some have even created sites devoted entirely to providing articles that could be read by their website visitors and have links that could lead to many sites that are related to the topics and subjects of the articles.

For example, the sites may feature many articles about a whole lot of topics. As a website visitor reads the articles they have searched for, they can find at the end of the article a resource box that can be clicked on to link them to the site that has submitted the article. Of course the article would be in relation to the site. Lets say if the article is about rotating the tires, the resource box may lead to a link to a site that sells tires or car parts.

But like the article itself, the resource box must also be eye-catching to demand the attention and interest of the reader. While the resource bow encompasses only a small space, providing the right keywords and content for your resource box will provide more prodding for the reader to go to your site.

Now we know what resource boxes are, what are the benefits of having a good resource box? Mainly its driving traffic to your site. Many sites would allow articles to be placed in their sites because they can make use of the articles to fill their pages. They also get affiliation with other sites that can be beneficial for them as well. For the sponsoring site, when you get people to click on your resource box, you generate traffic that can be counted upon as potential customers.

So what would be a good content for your resource box? Basically it is keywords, learning about the proper keywords that people are mainly searching for. There are many tools you can find in the internet that can help you in determining what keywords to use.

Resource boxes can also make use of all the creativity it can get. You only get a small space for your resource box so you better make the most of it. Try to catch the attention of your reader with resource box content that can make them give a second look. Unlike TV ads, you don’t have visual aids to drive your point in. But you do have the power of imagination of a reader. With the right content, you can make them think and intrigued.

Another tip is to use keywords that should be related to your site. Do not mislead your potential website visitors. Build your credibility so that more people would get enticed to visit your site and browse what you have to offer. Make the people click your resource box by providing resource box content that makes a lasting impression. You only get one chance to wow them and hundreds of chances to repulse them.

Never underestimate the power of the resource box. It may be small in size but they will provide a significant aid in driving traffic to your site. A boring resource box will never get a job done. Be fun and creative but at the same time show that you have a great deal to offer, too much to ask for something that couldn’t fit a paragraph? Yes and no, there are many tips and guides that can help you in doing this, the first step is realizing how important a resource box could be in making people click your link and be directed to your site.

3 Reasons Why Writing Articles Will Bring In Tons Of Free Business Leads

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

You probably know there are many places on the web to pick up previously written articles to paste into your website or newsletter. So why would you want to put in some real work

and write your own articles? What are the advantages to writing your own articles?

You will get Incoming Links to your website

After you write an article you will want people to copy it and put it on their website or newsletter. Why? Because at the bottom of the article you will put your “Author’s Bio” that will include information about you and your business, but more importantly you will also put a link to your website. The only condition applied to the person who uses your article is that it must be posted in full WITH YOUR LINK INTACT.

Incoming links to your website are very valuable. Google prefers sites that have developed a “reputation.” Google figures that websites with a large number of incoming links from related sites have earned a reputation and Google rewards the site with high rank. Thank about this: you allow a website owner to post your article on his site with the condition that he include your Author’s Bio and the link contained there. Presto! You now will have another incoming link to your website. The better your article, the more likely it is for you to get posted at high quality websites. This creates a demand for your articles from quality websites.

Search engines love fresh content

Every day the search engines send out :”bots” to collect information about what is happening on websites. When a bot finds new content on a website it gets excited let’s the search engineers know that the site is a hub of activity and probably in it for the long run. The search engines will reward your site with better ranking.

Become well known for your business acumen

Another reason to write articles for your website is that if you write enough of them and they have great information stated clearly you will likely become respected in your industry and by people who read your articles. Many of those readers will be in the market to buy when they see your article and chances are they will buy your product or service because you have gained their attention and respect.

You may know it is not too difficult to write an article, but most people think the ability to write a good article is a talent they do not have. Your ability to communicate effectively earns the respect of future customers.

Remember that you don’t have to own a website in the traditional sense to profit from writing articles. If you work with an MLM company, for example, and you paid a company to handle the sales/recruitment through a website provided for you, then you have the same motivation to write a good business article. After all, the links will go directly to the company sponsored website, right? Submitting your business article to an article distribution center like EzineArticles.com would be a necessity in this scenario.

So give it a try. Write an article for your website or your newsletter. Then put it out there so other people will post it on their websites and newsletters.

How Columbus Residents Can save Money with Their Phone Company

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Selecting the right phone company to save you the most amount of money may take some time and research on your behalf, but it can be well worth it in the end. If you are not a person who likes doing your own research about different products and services, there are some local online guides that can help you compare and contrast the different phone service providers in your area. It’s a wise decision to do this sort of research, as you may be missing out on a great package deal that could save you a significant amount money on your monthly phone bill.

The first step to saving money on your phone bill is to decide exactly what you need from your phone plan. For instance, there are many people who pay their phone company for unlimited long distance when they rarely make long distance calls. This is an example of wasting of money with a line of service that isn’t necessary. If you don’t need call waiting or three-way calling, then cancel these services so that you aren’t charged for them each month. Most phone companies will offer a bare-bones package that includes just a phone line for local use.

Most Columbus residents own a cell phone these days, and many of them use their cell phone if they need to make a long distance or three-way phone call, therefore there’s no need for them to have those services on their landline. You may also want to look into other programs like Skype and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), which offer inexpensive plans to talk over the Internet. Sign up for these programs and you can lower your phone service plan dramatically and save money each month.

There are plenty of ways you can reduce your monthly phone bill. It may take some time and research on your part, but it’s more than worth it to save hundreds of dollars a year.

Are You A Freelance Writer? Start Collecting People!

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Look around you at the people you know. Each and every one of them has a life and every life is full of experiences, some of which could be worth writing about.

Find yourself a notepad and keep it especially for your “People Collection.” In the notepad write the names of everybody you know and anything you can think of that makes that person stand out.

To give you an idea, here are ten things I can come up with “off the cuff” about my friends.

* Sailed across the Atlantic with no previous experience
* Ran for local government
* Is an author
* Runs a wedding planning business
* Is a mobile hairdresser
* Was raped
* Lived in another country as an illegal immigrant for many years
* Is a midwife
* Has had twins
* Cleared 1.80 in high jump

As you’ll notice, they’re a very mixed group with some of the points being more unusual than others. After all, it’s easier to find a midwife than to find somebody who sailed the Atlantic but they could both be useful to you as a writer.

When you’ve exhausted your friends and close acquaintances, start looking at neighbours, your children’s friend’s parents, your children’s school teachers - in fact, think of absolutely everybody you know anything about. It could be something as simple as remembering that the lady at the checkout in your local shop has a finger missing. Who knows when you might want to write an article on people who have lost digits and how they’ve coped.

The more entries you have in your book, the easier it will be to find new, interesting article ideas with a ready-made interviewee.

And don’t forget, you don’t need to stick with just one point per person. Some people have led very interesting lives.

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

From our deconstruction of hundreds of Hollywood blockbusters at www.clickok.co.uk/

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the Hollywood movies we have deconstructed are based on this template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

The Hero’s Journey:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.
