Sreenwriting Course: What is FADE IN?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

From our deconstructions of more than 100 Hollywood Blockbusters:

Hero’s Journey

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the Hollywood movies we have deconstructed are based on this template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

The Hero’s Journey:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Interpreted metaphorically, laterally and symbolically, allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.

What is FADE IN?

It’s actually very simple.

FADE IN is simply establishing context.

In A Beautiful Mind (Academy Award Winner Best Film, 2001), the very first text communicates to us that we are in Princeton and the very first sequence extols the beauty of mathematics.

In Elizabethtown (2005), the very first image is that of shoes being recalled - which relates directly to Drew’s Call to Adventure.

In Groundhog Day (1993), thevery first thing we see is clouds - because Phil is a weatherman.

In Silence of the Lambs (Academy Award Winner Best Film, 1991), the very first thing we see is Starling tackling the FBI assault course.

Everything Students Should Understand about Medical Insurance

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Health insurance usually is not top priority when planning a college career. In general, the last thing on a student’s mind is how to handle insurance needs. In your 20’s you will typically tend to think that you will be around forever and of course you will never develop an illness. As we all know, this is rarely true no matter how healthy a person might appear. A medical insurance policy isn’t only for those with plenty of money, it is a necessity.

For individuals fortunate to be included in a family insurance policy, in general most family policies should cover a student up to the age of twenty three. For those who don’t have insurance coverage through their parent’s plan, obtaining an appropriate student health insurance policy must be an important part of preparing for college.

So what is essential in an insurance policy designed specifically for students? So what is your deductible? This is an annual amount you must pay before the medical benefits starting, similar to an auto deductible. An example might be, should the deductible be 500 dollars, you will have to pay that sum prior to getting financial benefits connected with your policy. What is a co-pay? When you have paid your deductible, almost all policies ask you to contribute a percentage of the cost for each doctor’s visit, medication or operation. This, put simply, is a co-pay. What is your range of insurance coverage? Numerous medical insurance policies are HMO or Partnership for Prescription Assistance. This means certain physicians may not be in your list of health providers and might not be included by a insurance plan. Nearly all plans will provide a directory of participating professionals, before you make your selection make sure you consider this thoroughly. Catastrophic insurance coverage: Do be mindful that there is often a restriction on student health insurance policies as far as terminal illnesses are concerned, the coverage provided in most student health insurance is generally less than any regular plan. Restrictions: Restrictions are commonplace in college student health insurance plans. It’s crucial to read your insurance policy carefully to check out exactly what may and may not be included in any plan.

Carry any medical insurance cards in your wallet at all times. Illnesses are not just impossible to plan for, they are also likely to come about at an inconvenient time. Familiarize yourself with your student medical insurance policy even should you be covered by your parent’s policy.

How to Read Your Way to Speaking Success

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

The most important thing a speaker can do to enhance a career is to become an authority in their specific subject area. You want to reach a point where people automatically think of you when they are looking for information on your topic or are looking for a speaker for their event.
To do this you must read extensively in your field. I believe that speakers are leaders and leaders are readers. If you don’t read then listen to tapes or lectures. You have to learn all you can and more about your subject.

When you read extensively you give yourself a distinct advantage over those who don’t. And there are huge numbers of people who don’t read.

Statistics show that the average person reads less than one book a year after graduating highschool.

* 58 percent never finish the book they begin.

* 90 percent of book buyers never read beyond chapter one of the book they begin.

* 20 percent of the population purchase 80 percent of all books purchased.

Many people who do read do so to be able to function adequately at work. Few read to excel in a specific area of knowledge and huge numbers don’t read at all. Looking at these statistics you can see that if you are a voracious reader you have a winning edge over others.

When you stand in front of an audience to deliver a speech there is a lot of presumption present. The audience presumes that you know what you are talking about and have something meaningful and beneficial to give them. On your part you must presume that you are an authority on the topic and that you have expertise and knowledge far beyond that of your audience. The only way you can be confident in this presumption is by reading and studying your subject thoroughly.

I suggest that you set aside at least one half hour of study per day. One hour is better but you might just want to begin with a half an hour until the habit is formed. Make it something sacred and don’t neglect it for anything but the most serious of reasons. You will soon reach a point where you know a great deal more than you need to know when giving a speech. This increases your self confidence and really helps you when someone from the audience asks you a question that you have to answer extemporaneously. Your comfort with answering questions will impress and leave people believing that the presumption they had about you being an expert was correct. Your reputation as an knowledgeable speaker begins to grow and so does your career.

Without A Trace - The Great Rapture Controversy

Friday, March 27th, 2009

The rapture of the Christian is a well known matter among believers around the world. It is sometimes referred to as the catching away. Jesus spoke of it in Matthew 24:37-42 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, and marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coining of the Son of man be. Then two shall he in the field; the one shall be taken. And the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

The Apostle Paul further elucidates the matter by adding to it a few details that the account in Matthew leaves out. 1 Corinthians 15: 51-52 Behold I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Like so many other prophecies of the second coming believers can’t seem to fully agree on this one. The three common views are what are known as, pre-tribulation, mid- tribulation and post-tribulation rapture. That all believers dead or alive will be instantly transformed and carried up to meet the Lord at his second coming is not the argument. It is only when their going to be caught up that so puzzles the believer.

Not wanting to add to the confusion I can say that only the first two views have any possibility of being correct. The main purpose of Christ’s return is to judge a world that has plunged into the worship of the devil in the flesh (antichrist) and it culminates in the pouring out of God’s wrath on the entire world.

When the pouring out of God’s wrath actually begins in the course of the antichrist’s reign is extremely hard to pinpoint with accuracy. But whenever it is we who believe in Christ won’t be here. The reason this can be said without one shred of doubt is based on a promise God has made to his children that he will save them from the wrath to come. The wrath of God is for the wicked not for his own children. This promise is found in 1Thess.1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

The idea that we are not removed from the world before God starts to pour out his wrath, not only flies in the face of this clear promise but it smacks of absurdity. We would he directly in the line of fire and only a cursory perusal of God’s judgments would he enough to see that no one will escape some damage. In modern warfare that is called, collateral damage, but even this term would not adequately describe the damages to almost everything and everyone during God’s judgments.

Stop Losing Sales - Build Your Own Website

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

If you are in Direct Sales, you may not realize how many sales you are missing by not having a website of your own. Rep websites aren’t usually indexed in the search engines, and most can’t be personalized completely.

Let me give you an example of why it’s so important to have your own website. I searched for “Watkins Vanilla” on Yahoo, Google, and MSN.

- On Yahoo, Watkin’s company page was #7 in the listings. Ranked before them were reps with their own website.

- On Google, the company page was #5. Again, reps with their own websites ranked above them.

- MSN was the only place the company website was #1. However, following the company site were several personal websites.

Here’s another term I searched: “Tupperware catalog” (which according to Word Tracker is searched over 300 times a day). On Google and MSN, Tupperware’s company site wasn’t even on the first page of results! On Yahoo it was the first, but of course personal websites followed.

So what does this mean to you? It’s simple - there are millions of people searching for YOUR business or items from your business ever day. By having a personal website, you aren’t lost in a sea of other rep websites in the search engines. Even the simplest of terms can work their way to the top of search engine results, in many cases giving you more free traffic than you can handle!

Of course, once you get those visitors there it’s up to you to turn them into customers. The best way to do this is getting them on your list. More about newsletters next week.

So if you don’t have a website already, start making plans now to build your personal website today!

Those Who Are Not Afraid Of God

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Most of those who call themselves believers, profess that they are afraid of God. What does this mean? Let us talk more about this. Are they really afraid of God? Are they afraid of God as much as they are afraid of their friends and others while doing something wrong? For example, a colleague of yours has to rush out and has left the mail box open. You are very curious to take a look at it. If no one is around, will you be still afraid thinking that at least God is watching? Please think about this.

The truth is that we are afraid of real people and not God. Except very few of us, most of us don’t always remember the presence of God at all the places and during all the times. Take a marriage conducted alone in a temple by a couple. Who was the witness? God. But if one of the partner denies that marriage, or decides to keep the marriage a secret, can anything be done by the other partner? Nothing. Except praying to God, who was the witness, the other partner can do nothing. Because no human being was the witness. Was the partner who denied or chose to keep total secrecy and lied about the marriage to society afraid of God? No.

This is very unfortunate, but true. Liars and those who believe in deceiving others and themselves are not afraid of God, but only of society. For them God’s powers count for nothing. May God bless such cheats, because only He can save them from their treachery. There is a small Indian story of a teacher. Once he gave all his pupils a slip of paper and asked them to return after reading it at a place where no one was present. One of the pupil did not return till late evening. The teacher went in search for the boy, and found him in a corner of the jungle. He asked him about the reason of not reading what was written on the paper, and not returning. The boy replied- Holy Sir, you instructed me to read this at a place where no one is present. But I find that God is present everywhere. So where do I read this? The teacher applauded the boy for his faith and learning the truth.

The right way of living is to remember the presence of God at all the place and during all the times. The right way to live is to be afraid of God, and no human being.
