Fine January Snowfalls for the Northern Alps

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Climate change and the recession, these twin perils have let off the French Alps, at any rate for Christmas. On the other hand it may have been so wholly contrary. Before Xmas ski resorts in the La Rosiere area were cut off as snow rained down. Dual carriage way cols such as the busy Col du Courchevel were shut. At that place there was no electricity or telephones, home owners were evacuated to pro tem accommodation, it looked like a double of 1999.

It looks that all promotion is good promotion. Super Besse appeared every evening on national French news. When electricity was reconnected bookings started to arrive, pulled in by the good snowfall.

Les Menuires and nearby Megeve claim just about 4 metres depth on the top pistes at 2200 metres altitude and 2.3 metres at the end of the resorts. Currently the deepest in the Alps. Chatel alleges that there is three metres at the top of the resort. Regrettably a snow storm has knocked over a support of the ski lift which serves the sector. They are out of commission till the end of March. In other resorts in the French Alps reservations are up 16% in Meribel, Savoie and Verchaix. Flegere has 99.6% tenancy and traded a record breaking number of lift passes on Monday. That is good for luxury ski resorts and large skiing companies.

Simple Tips for Choosing Good Webhosting

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

When you start your own website, you want to make sure that you have reliable, decent hosting - if your host is down all of the time, your site might as well not even exist in the first place. So, to keep things smooth and simple for a webmaster-to-be, I have composed a list of tips for choosing the best hosting for your site.

Running a website does not have to be expensive. There are reliable hosts that can handle your site for 5 to 7 dollars per month. So long as you don’t have a huge website, one of these hosts is really all a person needs to manage their site.

It used to be that you had to pay tons of money on a domain name in addition to hosting, but more and more web hosting companies are offering a free domain name when you sign up, so keep an eye out for these - could save you a handful of money right there!

To get an idea of what companies are offering the best bang-for-the-buck at the moment, consider checking out an independent web hosting review site for recommendations. Do be careful though, as there are some review sites out there that are just scams set up by the owners of a hosting company to try to get them more business!

Look out for activation fees. Some hosts seem to be cheap at first - until you read the fine print to find out that they have a 50 dollar activation fee!

Check out the types of customer support a company offers. Web based instant message type support can be very quick and efficient when you have problems.

Think ahead when you buy hosting. Are you going to build a plain HTML based site? Or is there a chance you could want to add a forum or another dynamic feature to your site in the future? If so, you’ll want to make sure the site has PHP and MySQL. CGI might also be a requirement for you.

With these easy tips, you can be on your way to mastering your own website in no time!

Great Training Does Not Have to Take Place in a Classroom

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Training is one of those words that has numerous connotations associated with it. When we first think of training we often envision an instructor behind a podium imparting his or her wisdom, and then assuming students will have the foresight to apply the principles back in the real world. Second, training is often perceived as an expense that is hard to quantify. Third, training takes on the persona the instructor better be good, or the training process will be not be effective. In addition, it is perceived to be time intensive and not palatable when considering how to apply the training to the real world.

Well, none of these assumptions or presumptions have to be true. Training or learning does not have to take place in a classroom, and it does NOT have to be solely the instructor’s responsibility. There is a way to reduce management time, decrease long-term training costs, and ultimately turn employees into high performers who, believe it or not, manage their own learning. You may be asking yourself, “How does this take place?”

Actually, very simply, with a revolutionary concept called “Self-Directed Learning”. This extraordinary concept is taking the training learning world by storm. Learning is the key word with this concept, it imposes ultimate responsibility of the process on the employee. The employee is responsible for their own learning, versus an instructor having to train them.

So, “what exactly is Self-Directed Learning?” It’s a process that utilizes short techniques in 15 to 45 minute sessions geared toward simulating the required skills of a specific job function. The activities are performed on a continuous basis such as daily or bi-daily. Once the activities are completed, points are rewarded to track the progress of each employee. Many organizations will award employees by the accumulating points or achieving specific milestones to encourage the self-learning.

Next, the major factor in developing a successful self-directed learning program is using the proper techniques to achieve the desired outcomes. The following are some of the most common areas of training and how specific, self-directed learning techniques can enable successful learning to take place outside of the classroom:

1. Product Training - An employee could demo or teach the basic elements or components of a product and than have the employee teach it back. After all, it has been proven that to truly know something is to have the ability to teach it.

2. Industry Knowledge - An employee could be provided with reading materials on the industry, with the ultimate expectation they will either email a supervisor what they learned or present the concept to management.

3. Soft Skills - soft skills such as listening and presentation skills can be role-played by using specific scenarios that apply to the real world.

4. Positive Behavior - Modeling is a technique where an employee observes another employee who represents the positive behavior. A second facet of this technique is to then have the employee act out the modeled behavior.

5. Industry Workshops / Certifications - If employees need to go a public workshop or industry certification, you can leverage this event by making them email 3 things they learned or teach their peers in small groups what they learned & how they can apply the techniques to their jobs.

Designing a self-directed learning program is a relatively straightforward process. Any manager can learn the self-directed learning concept and how to successfully apply it. The key factor of a self-directed learning system is to match the activities with desired outcomes. The learning activities must produce activities or practices that are desired from a results perspective. In designing these activities if management is involved, the cost can be minimal.

Are You Becoming an Internet Addict?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

With the present economic climate being as it is, many start-up entrepreneurs have been attracted online with the lure of easy money. The chance to make their fortune on the Internet.

Many of these people are desperate to start making money from home and break free from the “rat race”. Ironically this desperation has given rise to a new compulsion:

Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD)

If you think you might be suffering from Internet addiction there are some warning signs you should look out for:

A preoccupation with the Internet while offline.
A constant anticipation of the next online session
Lying about the extent of use to others.
Using the Internet to escape problems or relieve a bad mood
Keep using after spending too much money on online fees

Generally those who get trapped in this syndrome get caught up in the biz ops game and end up in the situation where they jump from one opportunity to another in an endless quest for something easier, faster, or potentially more rewarding.

For compulsive users, their whole life becomes the Internet.

In fact this one has many of the symptoms of other more “normal” addictions! So much so that Alcoholics Anonymous has considered setting up a separate division of their organization to work with people addicted to browsing the Internet.

Internet addiction disorder, as a diagnosis, is still in its infancy, however, there are, ironically, a few online resources available to help sufferers wean themselves from the Internet. Here are some:

The Center for On-Line Addiction (COLA), which offers counselling, consulting and training. They have set up a website where there are resources that include online counselling, articles, FAQs, and self-help tests.

Mental Health Net: Online Addiction

So, what should you do if you find yourself becoming a victim of this new electronic addiction?

First, don’t panic. Second, consider sitting down with a pencil and notepad — and doing some good, old-fashioned brainstorming!

My advice is to get “FOCUSED”. There’s a fine line between being distracted by the Net and actually being addicted to it.

Because of the depth of information available online, there’s a danger that instead of doing the research you should be doing to find the right opportunity that you can turn into a successful business, you start doing the ‘biz op tango’ and start surfing completely unrelated sites.

It takes consistent effort in ONE business in order to make money online.

Choose a primary business and once that is making a nice profit every month, you can then consider researching other business opportunities to add additional streams of income to your portfolio.

This simple approach will prevent you from going overboard and becoming an Internet Addict.

If you dilute your time, energy and marketing by being distracted by the Net and actually becoming addicted to it, your personal and business life will inevitably suffer and you’ll probably end up worse off than before.

7 Ways To Save On Your InkJet Printing Costs

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Inkjet printers are not only getting better, they’re also getting less expensive. Why is that?

The inkjet printer manufacturers have built their business around the supplies rather than the printer itself. They make the printers as inexpensive as possible, sometimes selling them at cost, or less and making long term profits from the inkjet cartridges.

Manufacturers regularly warn about using generic cartridges, and highly recommend their own. Truth be told, there is very little difference between the two and you can regularly save over half of your current manufacturer branded cartridge purchases.

To help keep your inkjet supply costs low, here are seven tips that will keep you under budget:

1) When printing inter-office, internal, personal or draft documents, use the “draft” and “grayscale” options in your printer settings. This will save on both black ink was well as color ink. Save color and standard black for your final document print.

2) Select inkjet printers that use separate black and color inkjet cartridges like the Canon “i” series. Many of these printers have 2 black and 4 color cartridges that allow you to replace only the colors that are running low, not just the one ‘color’ cartridge as many printers often do. This saves on long term cartridge costs and lengthens the time between cartridge replacements.

3) Purchase “generic” cartridges made for your printer. These are of similar quality to the manufacturer’s brand, and often at less than half the price.

4) Purchase “remanufactured” cartridges compatible with your printer. These are cartridges collected from the original owner, cleaned and re-filled with the same ink.

5) Purchase a cartridge “refill kit”. You’ll receive a kit that will allow you to refill the ink in your cartridge rather than a new cartridge. This is a great way to recycle and the quality is high and costs low.

6) Purchase your cartridges in bulk to save on shipping costs and discounts are sometimes available on larger single purchases.

7) Order your cartridges online to save time and money. Many local stores don’t carry the generic versions and costs are normally substantially lower online.

Using any combination of the tips above will save you both time and money and help you manage your inkjet printing supply needs easily.

How To Use Public Domain Files Intelligently Part 2

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

In this article, we will consider how to use your public domain content and put it on a website.

If you already have a website, find related public domain content to simply copy and paste to your site and create dozens of brand new pages!

If your site is about dogs, get content about dogs. Dog tips, temperament, training, toys, etc. And put it on different pages on your site.

If you don’t have a website, find content that you would like to build a website out of and get going. Let’s explore this further today.

What’s your website going to be about? Public speaking? Gardening? Children? Well, what’s the content of your public domain file? Create a website on the theme you choose. It can be anything. Your own niche. Perhaps something you enjoy like cooking. Or even something you know nothing about like astronomy! That’s the beauty of public domain. All the content you need is already there for you to simply copy and paste. That gives your website value. More people would be interested to visit your site.

Where to start? It’s a good idea to get your own domain name. One online tools I like to use to find good domain names is http://www.domainname-search.com. Enter a keyword, like ‘gardening’ and you’re presented with plenty of possibilities to choose from. You can register a domain for less than $7 a year.

You can also use an existing domain you own and create a sub-directory of the subject. If your domain is something generic like yourname.com, create a directory like yourname.com/gardening to setup your gardening site.

Since you probably have plenty of content to use, you will probably want to break up the content and put them on several pages according to appropriate headings instead of dumping the whole bulk of text on one page. This is where a good understanding of the content is handy.

For example, if your site is about “Learning Tennis In 10 Days”, it would not be a bad idea to divide the site to ten pages - day one to day ten. This would present the content to your visitor in an attractive and uncomplicated way. It’s always a good idea to keep things simple and intuitive. Your visitor will know the lessons starts on Day 1 without you having to explain or write out an FAQ guide. And each day can have a subtitle to explain what the lesson is about. For instance: “Day One - Choosing A Racket.”

All depends on how you package the content for your visitors. If things are too complicated that a visitor can’t navigate your site, he’d much rather look for another site.

Besides cutting and pasting text, there are other things you can do to ‘enhance’ your site and make it attractive to visitors. A few subtle graphics is important. You can download a FreeWebTemplate and edit it with DreamWeaver or FrontPage. Then upload it to your webhost server.

Also if your public domain file has 360 pages, you don’t have to use all the content on your site. You can even focus your website on a specific niche. If you have content on dozens of different species of dogs, you don’t have to create a website on every dog in the book. How about focussing on just the terrier? Did you know that ‘terrier’ alone is searched for hundreds of thousands of times a month? That’s huge! That’s not all. You can even drill down further and focus your website on a particular type of terrier like the ’silky terrier’. Overture shows approximately 12,000 searches a month for ’silky terrier’ alone. That’s a big enough market to warrant a dedicated website.

You might have heard of automated software tools that produce a complete website of hundreds of pages from public domain content you input. I do not recommend it for 2 reasons. One, your website will be exactly the same as a hundred other people who use the software. And two, with so many similiar sites indexed by the search engines, this would increase the chances of your site being banned for what the search engines might consider spamming.

One of the most most crucial element of the website in my opinion is the TITLE. The title will be the first thing your visitors see and can decide whether he/she stays to explore your site further or goes away. That’s why you need to entice them with a solid compelling title. The book on dogs may be “All About Dogs” and showcase 12 different species. But if your niche is “terriers”, then “All About Dogs” may not be the most appropriate. You’d have to create a new title of your own.

To make money with your website, you need to have or find related products you can sell on your site. Digital products like ebooks are excellent examples because there is no stock or shipping to worry about. Everything is handled digitally. You can find hundreds of products to choose from at Clickbank.com. By inserting an affiliate link, you can earn handsome commissions on sales. If your site is on dogs, find an ebook on ‘dog training’ for instance, and put the link on your site. A visitor who happens to enter your site, reads the interesting content you have and thinks to himself, this guy knows what he’s talking about. I’ll check out his ebook. And you make your first SALE!

Another way you can earn money is by placing ads on your site. Sign up with Google Adsense. Copy a piece of code and Google puts an ad on your site that’s related to your content. A health site will have ads on health. An insurance site will have ads on insurances. If a visitor clicks on one of these ads, you earn money, anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars per click. Some clicks can make you up to $10 or more! You can create a content-rich website and have Google display relevant ads on your site.

Creating a website is not the end of the story. It is, in fact, the easy part. Optimizing your site for the search engines is the tough part. Having lots of good quality content will improve your rankings. Your site needs to get good rankings so that if someone searches for information pertaining to your niche, your site should ideally be in the top 10 or 20. Not on postion 543, where no one will find you. Search engine optimizers (SEO) charge hundreds or thousands of dollars but let me see if I can save you some money….

Here are some very good free tips and techniques you can implement yourself to give your website a boost in the search rankings. Visit http://www.GoogleWebsite.com

In part 3 of this series, I’ll show you how you can create your very own ebook too for free.

Cheap ASP Hosting

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

The type of ASP Hosting that you get always depends on how much you are willing to pay for the service. If anything comes for free or for a low cost, then you usually have to compromise. Cheap ASP hosting is also available, but the features that you get can be limited. You will not have the more sophisticated applications or be able to use advanced components with cheap ASP hosting.

With cheap ASP hosting, you cannot expect a separate server for you needs. You have to use shared web hosting shared by many domains. These domains may be from different companies that share common features. This is one of the main limitations when you use cheap ASP hosting.

You cannot get unlimited email accounts for your domain. The space provided for your email is limited with cheap ASP Hosting. In some of the plans, you only get one email id for a domain. If that is not enough, you are forced to spend more money for a better plan. You must also check to see whether you are provided with anti-spam filters and anti-virus protection with this inexpensive plan.

The data transfer for your domain is limited with cheap ASP Hosting. If your website gets more hits, then you may have to upgrade to other plans or buy more bandwidth. Most of the cheap ASP hosting plans start for as low as $1 per month. The higher the cost the more features you get. You can look for offers that offer discounted fees if you pay for a one year fee upfront. This could save you a lot on hosting costs.

ASP Hosting provides detailed information on ASP Hosting, Cheap ASP Hosting, Free ASP Hosting, ASP Web Hosting and more. ASP Hosting is affiliated with Web Server Hosting.

How Do I Design a Relaxing and Romantic Bedroom

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

When I was decorating my bedroom I found that contract furniture had the best range which was of good quality and didn’t break the budget.

It is only human nature to make judgements about a person based on the décor of their home. Your personality is very often expressed in they way you decorate your home, you can make subtle statements about your likes and dislikes and it very often creates an impression of how you live your life. Whilst a home with a lot of furniture may appear cluttered to some, others will see it as a sign of a busy or possibly hectic lifestyle. Neutral colours give the impression of a relaxed, calm environment whereas bold colours show energy and passion.

We very often have our home split into public and private areas. Kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms are more public as you will no doubt have guests using these areas at some point. Bedrooms, however, are more private. Guests rarely tend to see these areas, they are used during more personal times when you do not have visitors. If you are visiting someone’s home and get to peek at their bedroom décor, you could see a whole different side to their personality which is only apparent when you are not there.

If you feel you do not want to furnish the social areas of your home with expensive furnishings, save your more luxurious design ideas for your bedroom. Soft carpets and fluffy cushions are a great addition to a bedroom and are not at risk of being of being damaged or worn as they are in a more private area of your home which sees less traffic throughout the day. The colours you choose for your bedroom are also likely to differ from the higher traffic areas in your home as you will not be as worried that dirty shoes or spilt food may damage your bedroom décor.

How to Choose A Web Hosting Directory

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

What is a Web Hosting Directory?

Web hosting directories are marketplaces where products, plans, technical specifications, and prices are detailed of web hosting companies (services that allow web pages to be posted to the Internet and viewed). Customers may evaluate various web hosting company offerings and compare the information to their own specific hosting requirements, in order to choose the most suitable plan for their purposes.

In addition, web hosting company rankings are usually provided that may be used as a kind of “consumer reports” guideline to assist a customer in weighing the best overall effectiveness and reputation of web hosting companies. What makes a good web hosting directory?

A good directory will focus on diversity, as well as quality.

A comprehensive web hosting directory will provide a platform where clients may determine vendor stability, cost, performance (technical service) and security. One very important feature of web hosting directories is rankings, which can be an invaluable tool to any prospective web hosting company consumer in determining which web hosting company to patronize.

Typical resources that a web hosting directory may include are: tools to locate and research all kinds of web hosting, dedicated servers and collocation; along with web hosting news, information, constructive articles, and interviews.

Some of the most popular web hosting directories available now are:

The Web Host Industry Review (http://www.thewhir.com)

The comprehensive Web Host Industry Review’s resources include editorials, news and feature articles, along with its “Find Web Hosts” search tool.

TopHosts (http://www.tophosts.com)

Founded in 1997 by Rob Laidlaw, VerticalScope Inc.’s web hosting resource for the small and medium enterprise market features resources for small business owners, developers, webmasters, and e-commerce businesses with news, information and tools.

The Website Hosting Directory (http://www.websitehostdirectory.com)

In addition to the customary website hosting directory resources, The Website Hosting Directory also features daily deleted and expiring domain names, and Google tools for webmasters and existing or potential web page hosting consumers.

Host Search (http://www.hostsearch.com)

HostSearch.com offers a directory of web hosting providers and their services with an advanced search tool, reviews, hosting news, informative articles, interviews, and its ”Host Lab” tool.

Cheap Web Hosting Directory (http://www.cheaphostingdirectory.com)

Cheap Web Hosting Directory features daily expiring domain names, deleted domain lists weekly with traffic, pagerank, Alexa traffic and other links. It also offers Google Web Hosting and website hosting updates, interview archives, and links to articles, forums, free list sources, other hosting directories and web designer tailored information.

The Rank and File of Web Hosting Directories

Any good web hosting directory should provide access to information from the industry leaders; professionals who have been in the business for many years, and, as such, are in a position to provide meaningful insight into web hosting that can save a novice a lot of time and money in the long run.

It may seem as though web hosting company rankings can be easily manipulated if a directory’s sole purpose is to generate revenue. However, one way to determine the validity of web host rankings may be to establish if they are based upon customer voting and have provided their remarks with a website address to verify statements made. However, it is important to keep in mind that, even if that is the case, the information cannot be relied upon as a thorough examination of any given web site hosting company.

It is important to remember that just because a directory’s content is provided by anonymous or apparently non-partisan visitors, that does not make the information any more credible. All it means is that those particular individuals took the time to express their opinions on that specific forum at any given time.

Realistically, it is not possible for any web hosting company to have 100% positive reviews. The truth is that satisfied customers rarely remember to express their opinion. In contrast, however, biased customers who have had a less than adequate consumer experience may be very quick to broadcast it. What this implies is that a negative review doesn’t always reflect an accurate capsule of what a web hosting company really has to offer in terms of services and customer support. And this applies to information provided in forums, as well.

In conclusion, rankings on web hosting directories may be very useful in comparing web hosting companies. The important thing is to realize that the information provided is only going to reflect what has been provided to a particular source. That is to say, there is no way that each and every customer’s experience will be reflected in a given ranking. Therefore, it may also be prudent to check other resources, such as forums, to get a more comprehensive view and make the most intelligent choice possible.

The bottom line is that web site hosting directories are a useful tool in determining which web site host to choose. They offer a much more comprehensive view than a person conducting independent research can assimilate on their own. And, given that time is money, the resources that they provide are more than worth the time it takes for a web site hosting company consumer to utilize them.

Garden Sheds Need Not Be Too Costly if You Buy on the Internet and Take Advantage of the Enormous Selection

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

There are a great deal of sound reasons why you might want a shed and as luck would have it there are garden sheds to meet just about every last requirement. Sheds can be bought just about everywhere but what you will find is the price will vary enormously. You shouldn’t have to abandon the garden shed you want because it is too high-priced though. A shed is something you buy once and use for a long time and when you take a look online you can obtain sheds at some pretty silly prices. I do not mean silly and cheap as in quality but as in price. You’ll find you can obtain the shed you want for the cost of the one you were close to settle for very much less and if you possess a garden that you tend to each day you will almost likely require to look into a wooden shed as a place to put the water hose, tools and fertilizer etcetera.

Looking after your garden tools and making them easily available is a real good idea. You can find garden sheds on the internet that are the very same sheds you’d purchase in the store. As A Matter Of Fact, you can even go to the store and shop even spot them to check if it’s what you need and then go on-line and purchase it for a whole lot less. The difference in price is sizeable!
